Mr. Kenneth Hammond Sr.

November 14, 1931 – October 22, 2022

Mr. Kenneth Hammond Sr., age 90, of Valley Head, Alabama, passed away on Saturday, October22, 2022 at his residence.

Kenneth was born on November 14, 1931. He served in the Korean War, was a graduate of Troy University, and was a lifelong politician. He is fondly remembered for being the mayor of Valley Head and always trying to better his hometown community.

He is survived by:

Wife: Carol Payne Hammond

Children: Kenneth Hammond Jr., Tonni Armstrong, Tina Armstrong, Byron Armstrong, & Pam Hartline

Special Son/Grandson: Corey Armstrong

Sister: Patsy LaJean Matthews

Several Grandchildren, Great-Grandchildren, Nieces & Nephews

Preceded in death by:

Daughters: Sheila Hammond Yamada & Janet Shores

Parents: Hatchie Hammond & Patsy Lankford Hammond

Grandparents: William Bleve Hammond, Alice Holleman Hammond, Patrick W. Lankford, & Sally Blake Lankford

Pallbearers: Mayor Michael Key; Valley Head Police Department Officers: Brad Gregg, Jimmy Phillips, & Lamar Bray; and the Valley Head Fire Department

I remember the things already mentioned by the others. However I also remember a man who was twice elected to the Alabama State Senate as well as President of the Public Service Commission. As a senator he played a pivotal , positive leadership role in the chaos that characterized the civil rights struggle. BTW history has clearly shown Kenneth Hammond was on the side of the angels in that fight. Rest In Peace Bozo — you’ve earned it! Sadly Terry Johnson for the family of Tommie and Lee Dell Johnson.
