Doug and I met and became friends at the Navy Supply Corps School (NSCS) in Athens, GA in 1974. We were both officers (lieutenants) in the US Marine Corps at the time. Doug was a big man in so many ways—- a large, happy personality, and a fit, towering physical presence that filled a room. Not to mention that any young woman in his orbit (the University of Georgia and its coeds were right next door to the NSCS) could be easily attracted to the affable, kind, good-looking blonde haired stud that he was. After playing much beginner’s regulation golf together and spending a minimal, but sufficient amount of time studying, we graduated NSCS. Next, we were able to spend a few more months together at the same duty station (Marine Corps Air Station El Toro in Southern California) before Doug shipped out for a year in Japan, I think. He asked me to take care of his beautiful, but mechanically unreliable Jaguar XKE convertible, sports car, while he was gone. That decision may have been an error in judgement on his part. Indeed, that jag of Doug’s had some stories to tell. Nevertheless, we lost touch after his return from Japan. To this day, however, I recall his love for the Marine Corps and his love of the Lord. My heartfelt condolences go out to Doug’s family.
