Mr. Donald Lamar Smith

August 21, 1940 – August 2, 2026

Donald Lamar Smith, born on August 21, 1940, in Mentone, Alabama, passed peacefully into the arms of the Lord on August 2, 2026, after a courageous eight-year battle with lung cancer. His strength, unwavering faith, and gentle spirit inspired everyone who knew him.

 Donald was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Helen Smith, whom he loved dearly.

 A proud American, Donald honorably served his country for twenty years in continuous active service with the Alabama Army National Guard, retiring with the rank of Sergeant First Class. His military service reflected the values he carried throughout his life—honor, integrity, and selfless dedication to others.

 For the past four years, Donald made his home in Lake Alfred, Florida, where he lived with his daughter, Kaila.

 Donald was a kind, compassionate father, brother, grandfather, and friend. He never met a stranger and was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He was known for his warm smile, his wonderful sense of humor, and his favorite reminder to everyone he met: “Jesus loves you.” His genuine kindness and unwavering faith left a lasting impression on countless lives.

 Donald is lovingly survived by his three children: Dereck Smith of Conroe, Texas; Shirlee McGuire of Athens, Alabama; and Kaila Ramesh of Lake Alfred, Florida. He also leaves behind six cherished grandchildren: Caden Davis of Huntsville, Alabama; Asher Smith of Lakeland, Florida; and Lily Kate McGuire, Maggie McGuire, Neely McGuire, and River McGuire, all of Athens, Alabama. He is also survived by his brother, Wayne Smith of Sacramento, California.

 Donald will also be deeply missed by his faithful dog and constant companion, Rascal, whose loyal friendship brought him comfort and joy right up to the very last moment.

 Although our hearts are heavy with grief, we find peace in knowing that Donald’s long battle has ended and that he has been welcomed into his eternal home. His legacy of love, faith, laughter, and service to others will continue to live on through his family and all who were blessed to know him.

 His family takes comfort in the promise that they will one day see him again, and until then, they will forever cherish the memories of his smile, his kindness, and his constant reminder that, “Jesus loves you.”
