Mr. James Pomeroy Carmichael Jr.
September 6, 1926 – May 17, 2021
Mr. James Pomeroy Carmichael, Junior, a lifelong resident of Valley Head, AL passed away Monday, May 17, 2021.
He is survived by two daughters, Linda Carmichael Thomas (Bob) and Emma Suzanne Carmichael; his grandchildren, William Robert Thomas (Katherine), Kathryn Thomas Lucas (Trent), Lucy Ricketts Steffens (Brandon), John Carmichael Ricketts (Sarah) and Mary Virginia Pauline Ricketts; his great-grandchildren, Stella Elizabeth Thomas, Perry Elizabeth Lucas, Oliver Henry LeFevre-Ricketts and Theodore James LeFevre-Ricketts. He is also survived by daughters-in-law, Betsy Bethea Kopecky and Elaine Ashe Taylor. He is predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Doris Helms Carmichael and his second wife, Betty Smith Carmichael; his sons, James Larry Carmichael and William Gary Carmichael; and his grandson, James Henry Ricketts.
Mr. Carmichael owned a full-service station in Valley Head and served 47 years on the Board of Directors for the Sand Mountain Electric Co-op. He served his country as a member of the U.S. Merchant Marine Corp during WWII. He was a member of the Valley Head Masonic Lodge and served as a deacon of the First Baptist Church of Fort Payne. He loved Valley Head and was proud to be a part of its civic life.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the James P. and Doris H. Carmichael Family Endowed Scholarship (which will be given to DeKalb students who attend the University of Alabama).
